Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)

A DVM or Veterinarian is a position attained after completion of an undergraduate program of veterinary medical education leading to a professional degree in this field. To comply with legislation regulating this industry, the graduating veterinary school must be listed in the World Directory of Veterinary Colleges, published by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Furthermore, the practicing Veterinarian must be registered with the College of Veterinarians of Ontario.

The Veterinarian is able to perform a variety of services and procedures. They include: formulating diagnostic and treatment protocols, performing medical and surgical procedures, prescribing and dispensing drugs and assuming responsibility for the care and medical attention of patients. In addition, many veterinarians take on management and administrative responsibilities in the running of the veterinary hospital.

The Veterinarian requires support staff to assist in providing services and animal care to clients and patients. These positions are described as follows.

Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)

An RVT is a recognized member of the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians. There are 9 accredited colleges in Ontario that offer the course required to become a Veterinary Technician.

The RVT assists in both medical and surgical procedures. They are trained to perform laboratory tests, monitor and administer anesthetics, and carry out doctor recommendations for animal care. The Veterinary Technician can triage emergencies, take the patient's vital signs and initiate first aid.

Technicians perform all nursing functions and keep patients comfortable during their stay at the hospital.

Veterinary Medical Receptionist (VMR)

The Veterinary Medical Receptionist is the first to greet you on the phone or in person at the animal hospital. The receptionist has specific training in animal health management and in the protocols and procedures at the Veterinary office. The receptionist often helps the Veterinary Technician or Doctor with pet handling and is responsible for maintaining clinic-to-client communication. The Veterinary Medical Receptionist can also help to provide client continuing education and other services such as the sale of pet products, and appointment booking during office hours.

Practice Manager

The Practice Manager is primarily responsible for business administration and the flow of information through the practice. The manager controls the daily functions of the front office and assists the practice owner in formulating and implementing long term business strategies. The practice Manager develops and implements all procedures and policies for the clinic. She also acts as our Human Resources leader and deals with all staff issues. Furthermore, the PM is responsible for keeping the Veterinary office current in terms of technology, procedures and products offered and maintaining business partnerships within and outside of the community. Any questions regarding the procedures and policies at the clinic can be directed towards the Practice Manager.

Office Manager

The Office Manager is responsible for the day to day functioning of the front office. This includes maintaining adequate office supplies, scheduling staff, delegating office tasks, ensuring that appointments are appropriately booked, keeping the hospital clean and most importantly making sure that our clients are satisfied with the services they receive.

Animal Care Attendants (ACA)

ACAs are often students in the community that have an interest in animal care and welfare, and who wish to gain knowledge by working in the industry. Animal Care Attendants are responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility and of any visiting animals. Their major duties are to ensure that equipment, examination rooms, and kennels are disinfected between patients. They also assist with boarding and sick animals, making sure they are well fed, watered, walked and comfortable at all times.
